alexander technique
The Alexander Technique (AT) is a hands-on method developed by a man named F.M. Alexander in the early 1900s in which, through heightened awareness and conscious choice, students learn to use their bodies and minds more efficiently and easily, and thus learn to prevent injuries and chronic pain, reduce stress, and effectively change unwanted habits.
It is usually taught through private lessons, in which the teacher guides a student at a chair, sitting and standing (called "chair work"), and also has the student lie on a table ("table work"). The lesson can also include application work, in which the teacher helps a student navigate the dangers of playing a musical instrument, typing at a computer, or going for a walk without hurting themselves.
It sounds very strange, I know, but no description of it will take the place of an actual lesson. If you are suffering from back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, playing-related injuries, sports-related injuries, or if you'd like to explore making any skilled activity easier and more efficient, you should try a few lessons. After a few lessons you will know whether it's right for you or not.
I began AT lessons after an injury to my elbow prevented me from playing four recitals one spring. I had what is commonly referred to as "golfer's elbow", probably from shoveling snow. I tried other remedies before coming to the technique, but none worked for any length of time. What I didn't know was that the way I was using my body (called my "use" in AT jargon), both when I was playing the piano and also in everyday living, was keeping me from healing. In essence, I would get a little healing going, and then I would re-injure myself with my use. After three months of AT lessons that summer, I was back to playing again. It is a bonus that I can now play some pieces that I couldn't before, because the technique makes it easier.

If you would like to try AT lessons, you can contact me (I currently have an office in the Mason area), or I can recommend a teacher who has an office closer to you.
